Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the breasts in men beyond normal limits. Male breast tissue normally regresses during growth, but sometimes this does not happen, which can easily cause psychological distress in an otherwise healthy young man. Aesthetic surgery can solve this problem.

Surgical technique

The technique depends on the type of gynecomastia. There are essentially three types:

  • fatty (pseudogynecomastia), due to an abnormal accumulation of fat: liposuction is usually enough; more rarely, some skin must also be removed.
  • glandular (true gynecomastia), due to enlargement of the mammary gland: the gland must be removed surgically, usually through an incision around the areola.
  • mixed (the most common), which requires both techniques.

Other information

The operation can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, as a day case.
