Some people are bothered by excess skin on the inner and back part of the upper arms. It can be caused by major weight loss, loss of muscle mass or simply ageing. Aesthetic surgery can correct it with a relatively simple operation, the arm lift.
The principle is the same as for the face: lifting what has dropped and removing the excess skin. The operation can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, although general anaesthesia is sometimes preferable. It removes redundant skin and excess fat to give the arm a pleasing contour.
There are several types of brachioplasty, leaving different scars. Short-scar procedures, limited to the armpit, cannot correct larger defects and are suitable only for small amounts of excess skin. A full brachioplasty, which removes all the excess skin, leaves a rather long scar, often down to the elbow, whose quality is not always good, especially when tension is high. Often it is better to remove a little less skin and have a satisfactory scar.
